OpenI18N 2.0 Public Review Period


The System Architecture Sub-committee has released the LSB Internationalized Runtime Environment (OpenI18N) specification version 2.0 for public review. The two week public review period is from November 18th until December 2nd 2004 inclusive.

Certified: Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3 / LSB Internationalized Runtime Env't


Red Hat has announced that Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3 is the first operating system certified by the Free Standards Group as compliant with the LSB Internationalized Runtime Environment. Red Hat has also announced its commitment to IIIMF (the Internet/Intranet Input Method Framework) endorsed by OpenI18N. IIIMF is a next-generation input method framework that will make it easier to enter complex characters in languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Hindi, and switch between them. The Free Standards Group Open Internationalization Initiative (OpenI18N) announced the release of the locale data markup language specification version 1.0: see http://www.openi18n.org/specs/ldml/.

OpenI18N 1.3 and OpenI18N locale name guideline 1.1 now available


Both OpenI18N globalization specification Version 1.3 and OpenI18N locale name guideline Version 1.1 have been approved as OpenI18N standard specifications at the OpenI18N meeting in March 2003.


Common XML Locale Repository Project Announcements


The Free Standards Group Open Internationalization Initiative (OpenI18N) announced the release of the locale data markup language specification Version 1.0: see http://www.openi18n.org/specs/ldml/. Locale Data Markup Language Specification v1.0 is the foundation for the Common XML Locale Repository project. The project is a joint effort among the members of the Linux Application Development Environment (aka LADE) Workgroup of the Free Standards Group. The founding members of the workgroup are IBM, Sun and OpenOffice.org. The workgroup is open to additional members, both industry and community. The purpose of this project is to devise a general XML format for the exchange of culturally sensitive (locale) information for use in application and system development, and to gather, store, and make available data generated in that format.

LI18NUX (Linux Internationalization Initiative) has changed its name to OpenI18N (Open Internationalization Initiative). This was done to better reflect the groups open source activities that go well beyond Linux.

Li18nux2000 conformance test suites


Free Standards Group/OpenI18N WG (formerly LI18NUX WG) developed the conformance test suites for OpenI18N1.2 (formerly LI18NUX2000) Globalization specification. The test suites can be downloaded from conformance test suites subgroup Web page. Those automated tests are performed on FSG/LBS TET/VSX framework.
